Montréal-based electronic synthwave producer Das Mörtal released a new album, BURY THE SORROW, on the 13th of October via Lisbon Lux Records. BURY THE SORROW is the latest addition to Das Mörtal’s arsenal of EPs and albums which have received over 20 million streams on Spotify alone. His music has received substantial media and radio support across multiple countries and earned a presence on influential YouTube channels like NewRetroWave. It has also garnered praise from esteemed industry publications such as CLASH Magazine, KALTBLUT Magazine and METAL Magazine, to name a few. He has appeared at numerous major festivals such as Osheaga, while opening on tours for the likes of Vitalic, Perturbator and Gesaffelstein. He has played at nearly 100 shows since 2015, including more than 70 dates in the U.S. and Europe (UK, France, Scandinavia). Inspired by the likes of Steve Moore and Aphex Twin, Das Mörtal’s sound is dark and nostalgic, masterfully blending genres from techno to synthwave to horror/sci-fi film soundtracks.
Walk us through your creative process?
Mostly sitting in front of my computer and trying stuff out. I usually watch movies while making music, which helps.
What has been the most defining moment of your musical career?
It’s between the release of my EP Hotline Miami II and my track for Streets of Rage 4. They both are mentioned when I meet fans during touring as what made them discover me. I also was really proud to have gotten the chance to work on the Streets of Rage 4 soundtrack since I was a major fan as a kid of the franchise and knew how iconic and important the soundtrack was to people who grew up with those games.
What equipment or software are you using the most?
I’ve been using FL Studio since the early 2000s and haven’t moved from the platform. Inside of it I use Vital synth and a lot of Native Instruments & Arturia plugins.
Whats your performance setup looking like?
Laptop running Ableton Live, Akai AP40mkII midi controller, Akai MPC One as a sequencer & sampler, Behringer Neutron synth and some modular synth stuff. With the release of the latest album which has a lot more vocals, I also need a mic now.
Who are your biggest inspirations at the moment?
I’m into a lot of stuff I use to listen in the 90’s like Autechre or Leftfield, but also listening to a lot of newer stuff that borrows from the 90’s dance scene like Lil’ Texas or TDJ.
Whats your favourite way to pass the time? Any hobbies?
Movies & video games, mostly horror movies, and right now on my second play-through of Lies of P.
Whats next for you as an artist?
Live shows and keep trying to make new music that might birth a new album in the future but that will take a while. Right now I’m just really happy that BURY THE SORROW is out and that people can finally listen to it.
