Melbourne-based producer and singer-songwriter Purient unveiled her new single ‘Mwah’ on 24 October via Steel City Dance Discs. The track is the lead single from her forthcoming EP Mwah slated for release on 21 November.
This is Purient’s first release in two years, with her previous releases receiving acclaim from This Song Is Sick, Magnetic Mag and Purple Sneakers to name a few. Purient is a key figure in the underground electronic music scene in Naarm, and she’s also part of the dream-pop band Acopia.
‘Mwah’ submerges the listener into Purient’s universe which oozes mysticism, flamboyance and dismantling the status quo. ‘Mwah’ illustrates this notion deftly, as she interweaves pensive chords, simmering basslines and groove-laden synths into a charismatic yet assertive offering.

Drawing inspiration from the interconnected nature of the physical and emotional aspects of human connection, Purient’s work has caught the attention from the likes of Eartheater and Varg2™ who have both remixed her work. Purient explains more on the creation of the track: ”[w]hen making ‘Mwah’, I was noticing a change in my personal growth, self-worth, and letting go of what people might think of me. The lyrical content is simple, but to me runs a little deeper.”
The accompanying music video was directed by Jamie Timony and filmed by Jordan Hourigan. It sees Purient strutting down the city streets of Melbourne in an all black outfit, hair slicked back with bold sunglasses. It alternates between shots of her in the Melbourne inner city and scenes of her singing in the mirror using a hairbrush as a mic.
