We sat down with Errance, the solo project of Canadian producer, director, and composer Gabriel Gagnon. He recently released his third single, ‘Oxytocin’, through Société Holographique de Montréal. Co-produced with his studio partner Hologramme, the track is a prelude to his forthcoming self-titled debut album, slated for release on May 17th, 2024. His first track, ‘Guidance’, received airplay on BBC Radio 6’s Tom Ravenscroft and Deb Grant. Errance is beginning to carve out a place for his own musical expression in the wake of a process of deep introspection, self-growth and a profound connection to nature.

Walk us through your creative process?
My creative process typically begins with a sequence of chords, a patch on a keyboard, or a sound captured from nature. Once I feel prepared and have the mental space, I take this initial idea to the studio and spend hours building upon it. When I sense that the track is taking shape, I involve collaborators like Hologramme, my studio partner, to refine the production further. Depending on the needs of the composition, I may also bring in additional musicians such as flute players or horn sections to enhance the arrangement.
What has been the most defining moment of your musical career?
I’ve experienced some incredible victories in my journey, collaborating with diverse artists, embarking on big tours, securing notable sync placements, and contributing to award-winning albums. However, the decision to follow my own musical instincts and create Errance holds the most significance for me thus far. It represents a deeply personal and authentic expression of my artistic vision, marking a pivotal moment in my creative journey.
What equipment or software are you using the most?
For this album, I intentionally avoided relying on loops or samples. Instead, I experimented with analog gear such as vintage drum machines, a Juno synth, old spring reverbs, space echoes, vintage Moogs, Vermona drums, electric pianos, Modulars and more. This hands-on approach allowed me to craft a sound that is truly authentic and reflects my artistic vision.
Tell us about how your faithful canine companion, Pépé, keeps you company and affects your music-making process.
Pépé is not just a pet; he’s my faithful partner—a unique blend of an Ibiza hound and a German Shepherd, rescued from the aftermath of the Port of Beirut explosion in Lebanon. His journey makes him exceptionally special. Pépé is more than a companion; he helps me maintain my routine and creative process, gently nudging me when I get lost in looping thoughts for hours. His presence significantly enhances my daily creative endeavours.
Tell us about how you record some of your organic sounds. Do you use a field recorder?
I see myself more as a collector than a musician, driven by a deep passion for field recording and unique textures. I curate a sound bank filled with the evolving movements, textures, and ambiance of each season. These recordings often serve as ‘song starters,’ allowing me to emphasise the natural, vegetal feeling in my music.
How would you ideally like your music to be heard for the first time? Give us a place, time of day, or any sort of context.
It depends on the tracks, but I’d say my music is best enjoyed in nature or during a run or hike. I consider my sound meditative, dynamic, and focused. It’s designed to enhance brain activity, helping you contemplate new landscapes or tackle tasks— and maybe a little dancing on the side!
Who are your biggest inspirations at the moment?
Music for Psychedelic Therapy by Jon Hopkins
Photay, Kiasmos, Rival Console, Mount Kimbie, Supreems
What’s your favourite non-musical way to pass the time? Any hobbies?
I like to build stuff. I’m currently building a new ”shed” studio in the woods behind my house next to Orford National Park.
What’s next for you as an artist?
I’m itching to create an EP in that Shed Studio inspired by the nocturnal wonders. Ambient sounds from the night intertwined with intricate rhythms and melodic textures, crafting a vibe that’s upbeat and utterly immersive.
