After eighteen months of sonic shapeshifting and genre alchemy, BICEP, the ever-evolving Northern Irish duo of Andy Ferguson and Matt McBriar, have released what may be their most poignant CHROMA track to date. The final single from the pair’s ambitious CHROMA series, ‘CHROMA 010 BRILLO’, arrives as both a euphoric finale and a soft exhale — a track that distills the essence of the project into one shimmering, soulful release.
This moment marks the culmination of a sprawling and unpredictable chapter in the BICEP story: one that has encompassed ten digital singles, a series of boundary-pushing DJ/AV hybrid shows, and a fluid new identity crafted in collaboration with futurist design studio Terrain (led by David Rudnick). CHROMA has never solely been about the music — it has been a multidimensional reimagining of the modern label, the role of club culture in a post-pandemic world, and how BICEP themselves relate to dance music’s past, present, and future.
“We have always aimed to strike a balance between looking to the past and embracing the future,” the duo explained. “We were not part of the clubbing scene during the 1990s, but that distance has allowed us to reinterpret that era on our own terms.”
That reinterpretation has been the guiding force of CHROMA – from the acidic punch of ‘CHROMA 001 HELIUM’ to the dubby introspection of ‘ROLA’, and now the crystalline tenderness of ‘BRILLO’. Even under side-aliases such as B.D.B (a collaborative project with Benjamin Damage) and DOVE (a creative union with vocalist Kehina), the message has remained consistent: BICEP are not merely chasing club moments – they are constructing immersive sonic worlds.
‘BRILLO’ closes the series with a fusion of 1990s-reminiscent rave textures, delicate pads, and ethereal vocals that feel like the echo of a collective memory. It is music that longs for the dancefloor while simultaneously transcending it.
Launched in January 2024, CHROMA was conceived as a creative laboratory for everything “from Acid to Alkaline” — a platform for sounds that did not conform to the established BICEP identity. “We wanted to present a more complete vision of what we do in the studio,” they shared. “The label was designed to evolve and draw on inspiration constantly — both musically and aesthetically.”
Over the course of the series, CHROMA has featured collaborations and aliases including ‘A.L.O.E’ and ‘L.A.V.A’ as B.D.B, the emotive ‘Bi83’ and ‘KR36’ under DOVE, and standout tracks like ‘STEALL’ (with fellow Belfast native Hammer) and ‘TANGZ’ featuring ELIZA. Each release has been a new facet of the same vision — a mosaic of moods and styles that reveal more about the duo’s creative depths.
Beyond the music, CHROMA has played host to monumental live experiences — sold-out headline shows at Finsbury Park, Brighton Beach, and consecutive nights at London’s Drumsheds, each pushing the boundaries of audio-visual storytelling. The hybrid DJ/AV show has taken BICEP to headline stages at Glastonbury, Coachella, Wilderness, and Brooklyn Mirage, alongside global stops including Portola, Making Time, and CRSSD, as well as an appearance at MIRA, Barcelona’s celebrated digital arts festival.
A deeply personal milestone occurred during Fabric’s 25th anniversary, when BICEP performed under their DOVE alias — a set that marked Matt McBriar’s first return to the stage following major brain surgery to remove a rare, non-cancerous Craniopharyngioma tumour. That night became more than just a performance — it was a reclamation of purpose and presence.
Looking ahead, BICEP have begun teasing TAKKUUK, an upcoming soundtrack project in collaboration with sonic innovators Earthsonic, hinting at yet another reinvention in sound. A physical CHROMA boxset is also on the way, giving fans a tangible archive of this monumental body of work.
With ‘BRILLO’, BICEP may be closing the CHROMA series – but their sonic worldbuilding is far from over. More exciting chapters await.
