Q&A with badfocus, the young producer pushing the boundaries of genres

We chatted to Prague-based producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist badfocus, who has recently unveiled realities, a six-track EP accompanied by a mesmerizing video for its title track. Behind the alias is Prokop Korb, a musical prodigy who, since launching his solo project in 2020 at just 18, has built a remarkable portfolio, earning praise from electronic icons like Max Cooper, Pantha du Prince, and Grandbrothers. His artistry has taken him to festival stages across Europe and Canada, while his cinematic scores include the Czech National Theatre’s debut dance film New Normal and soundtracks for acclaimed films and TV series. His documentary work, including I’m Not Everything I Want To Be, has premiered at Berlinale and featured at ICA London, NewFest, and Viennale. realities weaves glitchy textures with introspective emotion, drawing comparisons to boundary-pushing artists like XXXTentacion, Saba, and Arca.

Walk us through your creative process. Do you have any rituals or superstitions?

I always appreciate a good talk with the artist that i’m collaborating with, accompanied with a cup of coffee before we get to work. I think it’s really important to connect, to create a good setting for the creative work to happen.

What has been the most defining moment of your musical career?

I don’t think I have any. I mean I don’t wanna define my career by a moment, or a few of them. I’m not doing it with the purpose of reaching certain moments, rather enjoying the creative process and the overall journey.

What equipment or software are you using the most?

I’m working with Logic Pro in the studio, for live performances and shows I use Ableton.

What does your performance setup looking like?

I usually do a hybrid set, based in Ableton, combining my own tracks with different remixes. I’m always remixing tracks live as well, combining different effects, adding live finger drumming and some modular synthesis bleep-bloops. I always put effort into the visual side as well, I travel with a minimalistic neon-like stage design.

Who are your biggest inspirations at the moment?

My friends, all the amazing people who I’m so blessed to be around.

Is there any music you enjoy that fans of your music may find surprising?

I used to listen to different 70s art rock albums, kind of grown up on that. Damn I haven’t listened to something like that in a long time. Probably gonna put some Pink Floyd on.

What’s your favourite way to pass the time? Any hobbies?

It started to be really cold in Prague the last few days, a morning walk with a few minutes of ice cold water dip in a local pond. The day is always perfect after doing it. Also enjoy riding endless kilometers on my bike during the summer.

What’s next for you as an artist?

I will be releasing an album called focus, early 2025. It’s the most personal project I ever did, actually the first one that has a few tracks that I’m singing on myself. Very much looking forward to the release, it feels like I’m just opening up to everyone really. And it’s a nice feeling.
